swing low, sing out

I never realised the ‘swing’ of ‘swing low sweet chariot’ was an upbeat, thereby putting the emphasis on the word ‘low’. So unless that’s an LSO affectation, I learned something this evening, almost outweighing the – for me – excrutiating embarrassment of having to sing. Not on my own, only as part of a couple of audience participation numbers but still, they made me sing!

But them’s my own hang-ups and judging by the general enthusiasm in the room (audience and choir), I’m in the minority. So as this evening’s performers enjoy some very well-earned post-concert celebrations downstairs, having introduced an excellent new piece into the choral repertoire no less (Rachel Leach, Three Short Songs; highly recommended) I shall say goodnight.
