I was the same way when I was younger, I wanted to have all of those cool gadgets and knives for my instrument. But, over the years I am thankful I play a brass instrument!

Sitting on stage looking at the woodwinds and their bags of junk and concern for humidity, I am no longer jealous!

Back in the 80s there was a truly obnoxious oboe player in our orchestra. He never had a nice word for anyone. One night he was especially haughty. During the concert, a few measures before his big solo I leaned over and asked “is that part of your reed on the floor?”

Can’t forget the bassoons too! I love the order of events leading up to no cor anglais solo.

The bassoons have their own problems and have no need to intrude on Christine’s 15 mins of fame!

I was there in Birmingham. Been wondering what had happened all weekend. Cheers for the blog!

Love your blog, Gareth. Especially the insights about playing Mahler symphonies (which I always start off disliking but slowly learn to love).

I did a Mahler 7 last Saturday, and in the short time between the afternoon rehearsal and the evening concert, the principal oboe’s favourite reed cracked, and the 2nd piccolo’s G# pad sprung a massive leak…

I feel the piccs pain! You need g sharp in the solo on the last page. At least you know what to get them for Christmas…
