You may have noticed that we have a guest blogger on the LSO blog this weekend. We have invited Toby Deller to sit in on all three days of the Donatella Flick LSO Conducting Competition to lift the lid on the sessions that are not open to the public – in previous years the audience at Final concert will only see the three conductors chosen after the two days of heats.
So who is Toby? He introduces himself:
“Hi, I’m a freelance viola player; I also write about music and musicians. Mostly this is for Classical Music magazine but elsewhere too: I’ve had work published in the Guardian, The Strad, Music Teacher and Early Music Today among others.
As a viola player, I’m used to watching conductors. Well, once a year at least! I play in the Dartington Festival Orchestra, the house band of the famous international summer school, which puts student conductors through their paces on the advanced conducting course there. So I reckon I have a pretty good nose for when a conductor is doing getting it right or doing it wrong!”
